We recently finished up two weeks in the Outer Banks. We rented a little three bedroom house in Nags Head -- and ended up loving the area for its many activities, beautiful beaches, and easy access to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The house wasn't ocean front, but luckily we had access to a lovely pool/restaurant/bar that was right on the beach, so that's where we ended up going for most of our beach days.
